I'm not sure I've shared this one before, though I've definitely watched/listened to it before! If you listen to just one Julian Lage performance, make it this one...

I'm always glad we introduced the forum to Ant Law - besides being verty very good, he straddles the imaginary line between straight ahead and fusion, thus overcoming any number of prejudices among potential fans. Here he is being interviewed - spoiler alert: this does contain technical language !

            Indeed.

I have to say, regarding your comment about straddling, I was surprised to hear Ian singing the praises of Steve Coleman in the context of his M-Base work, blatantly a fusion sort of jazz.

I've been listening to a lot of the new generation, F-Ire Collective etc, from 2003 CDs and broadcasts, and rate Robert Mitchell as one of the finest British pianists to come after the likes of John Taylor and Keith Tippett, (or the unalikes, rather!); this track reminds me harmonically of stuff from 1970s Canterbury prog rock, Hatfield & The North, Gilgamesh, National Health and so on.

I'm willing to bet you can't wait for the BBC's forthcoming Jazzathon on Mingus, this coming weekend.

Picking up on the Mingus theme, I seem to recall reasding somewere that classical pianist Kathryn Stott had studied jazz with Jaki Byard. I have been listening to her playing Faure today and this came in to my mind. In can find niothing on the internet to confirm this. Am i mistaken?
