I have always loved this arrangement. No one ever seems to talk about Bill Challis these days. He is a name that is completely forgotten even if writers like Gene Lees were still in admiration of him in the 1980s. Challis always struck me as someone who other arrangers / writers admired even when the jazz listening public has moved on. Challis was instrumental in bridging the gap between jazz and classical music and i believe he was responsible for transcribing the Bix piano compositions which borrowed heavily from Impressionism. I have always wondered whether the writing for the feature by the trumpet section in this piece was actually a transcription of another Beiderbecke solo. "San" feels very much of it's era whilst also quite futuristic at the same time.

I think arrangers / composers such as Redman, Carter, Ellington and Henderson are rightly seen as core components in the evolution of jazz composition for larger ensembles but Bill Challis is now totally over-looked.

Nice interviews with Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Joe Henderson, Tony Williams (Super Star Quintet with Kenny Barron) at the North Sea festival 1982. Surprised how amiable everyone is, including Freddie who was not always always known for that.

Good innit? Charles Lloyd had really steeped himself in the Coltrane approach by that point.

Elvin Jones 4tet (with JUNIOR COOK), live at Music Inn, Rome. 1975. Hot and sweaty night it appears...

Not too crazy (one bit) about the guitarist, Roland Prince, but Junior...

                          Many thanks, BN.
Junior Cook's in powerful form - agree about the guitarist. Wonder if Junior & Elvin ever recorded together?

Interesting comments re Junior's early influence on Joe Henderson, which does sound plausible. He was a superb tenor player, one I've grown to regard more and more. I used to think he was Hank Mobley-ish, but he had his own thing. I remember an interview with Freddie Hubbard, the usual bluster about how he was the one who pushed Junior to come out of his shell, I think JC was always aware and *there*.

JR Nice to see Junior Cook getting some well earned attention. Excellent Junior on this video and a good reminder of the underrated trumpeter Bill Hardman a longtime frony line partner of Junior.

Here is Bill with Lou Donaldson playing Bill's best known composition "Politely" with Horace Parlan, Sam Jones, Al Harewood.
