Dear Friends:
Frank Lacy's live streamed show this week will be number #100 in a row since we started our "Get The Cats Working Again" initiative. Our goal was to employ one band per day and raise money to pay rent on the venues. We never imagined that it would go on this long. We have been closed now 175 days, nearly 6 months. This is far longer than we had anticipated. The government loan we received on April 15th (the so-called PPP loan) has long been depleted having been designed to last only 8 weeks. We are now months after that with no further help and in debt to the government. Since then there has been zero help from any agency either city, state or federal. Restaurants and bars in New York City are the very last businesses to still be shut in the entire country. If it hadn't been for the support of our fans through our foundation Smalls and Mezzrow would have been history already.
It's exhausting work maintaining the clubs and keeping them clean and ready. The musicians who come each day to perform are so grateful for any opportunity. The music has been stellar, each artist performing at the very top of their ability - nobody mailing it in here. My skeleton crew has been working tirelessly and with the faith that we will return one day. I also have that faith. I believe that music will return to this city again. New York has set records for the lowest infection rate and we've maintained that now for 30 days in a row with infection rates less than 1% and nearly zero deaths. It's time to give us the chance to prove that we can operate within guidelines that protect our customers and musicians and still give us a fighting chance to survive.
I can only say that we are grateful to the jazz fans of the world who value our music and tune in each day. We see 20K viewers average on each show with wonderful support from all over the world. My deepest and most sincere thanks to our foundation supporters who have made donations towards keeping the clubs afloat until the day that we can reopen again. If you think you would like to sponsor a live show at Smalls please email us directly at foundation@smallslive.com and we'll send you the information. Otherwise, please check our site, www.smallslive.com. A minimum donation of $10 gets you access to our historic archive of past shows, now more than 19,000 sets of music in our library.
I wish everyone peaceful abiding and clarity of mind in this confusing era.
Regards,
Spike

Am I imagining it or did the title of that video change? I swear when I first saw it it was something like 'music theory is racist'.
In any case, I'd guess that it would be something about Schenker. I haven't yet watched it, not sure if I will. I mean, there is a load of jazz music theory, I wonder if that too is deemed racist.

More Lage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSeidSX6dg0
I have to say, while initially but also to some extent right now, I find Lage's compositions a bit on the thin side, I've nonetheless been seeking his stuff out a fair amount - since he is a brilliant soloist, I have come around to his compositions because while they are IMO quite thin or simple or on the face of it not too interesting, what they do is enable Lage's brilliant improvisations...
