    The Motley crew

    Sat 8 Feb
    5pm - J to Z

Kevin Le Gendre with further highlights from the J to Z stage at the London Jazz Festival that took place in November, including the resident artist, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. Plus German pianist Julia Hulsman and a collaboration between guitarist Rob Luft and saxophonist Dave O'Higgins, with music by John Coltrane. And Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen shares some of the music that has inspired her, including a piece by Kenny Wheeler.

Further musical highlights from the J to Z stage at last year's London Jazz Festival.

    12midnight - Freeness
Corey Mwamba hears from artist Allis Hamilton who lives in a hand-built shack in the Australian outback. She makes improvised music as part of the trio Alias Nun. There's also a collaboration between saxophonist Mette Rasmussen and guitarist Julien Desprez, plus a meditative piece that improvises with volume for turntables and electronics.

    ...Er, whatever that means...

Allis Hamilton describes how Australia’s wildfires have affected her as an improviser.

    Sun 9 Feb
With Alyn Shipton, today featuring recordings by John Dankworth, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins.

6.45pm - Sunday Feature: Shades of Black - the Art and genius of Archibald Motley Jr
Lindsay Johns assesses the legacy of Chicago-raised artist Archibald Motley Jr (1891-1981), whose paintings of African-American men and women - charting the development of Chicago's Black Metropolis, the birth of gospel music and black nightlife - undermined racial stereotypes and captured the politics of skin tone in Jazz Age Chicago. Johns travels to Chicago and visits the Chicago Art Institute and the city's History Museum, and also hears from contemporary artists.

Corey Mwamba has apparently removed "Jazz" from his vocabulary, but there were a fair number of free-jazz pieces there. Wasn't too enthused with the amateurish item from the Australian Outback.

Yes, a great JRR today, though writing on here with only half an ear to the radio meant I missed most of the announcements! The tracks played would be listed on the Radio 3 iplayer for the programme, but we would be missing Alyn's personnel listings, which are always so informative. It might be worth checking later to see if it's back on.

Nerd note : Sonny Rollins' "Solid" (1954) with le grand Elmo Hope, Kenny Dorham, Percy Heath and Art Blakey was recorded WITHOUT Blakey's high hat as he had forgotten to pack it with the rest of his kit. "This wouldn't bloody happen with the great Gene Krupa!", shouted an angry Mr Rollins as he smashed Blakey's bass drum over his head...
