    Gene Ammons...newly discovered "lost" video...

From a Chicago? Jazz TV show in the early 70, newly discovered video tape of Gene Ammons, playing tenor I think with a varitone (sp) attachment? Anyway, very little of Gene on film, so here 'tis...

Thanks very much for that link! Interesting for his playing with an octave duplicator, stated as a Varitone as referenced in the commentary below. Those devices were popular at the time, particularly in the emergent jazz-rock. Lol Coxhill used one - a Gibson Maestro - with Kevin Ayers' Whole World Band, and Elton Dean with Soft Machine. The jazz commentariat of the time was appalled, of course.

The first time I ever heard Gene Ammons was on a track by his brother - possibly a boogie woogie version of "Sheik of Araby".

What the Selmer Varitone does...a demonstration...http://youtu.be/hmR79o7i5m0

I seem to remember Sonny Stitt cut an album using one and Eddie Harris. Wasn't one shown to Coltrane just before he died? OK if you want to battle amplification and organs etc, but the bottom octave sound is horrible.

Clark Terry used a varitone trumpet at times... electric mumbles!

Is the wind synth still around?
