Did anyone listen to this, after all?

It's disappearing in 24 hours' time - Monday 6th September.

Jez Nelson presents a gig by New York quartet Mostly Other People Do the Killing.

PS: There's a Louis Armstrong tribute in the middle. I've never heard Armstrong called 'Lewis' before. A Yank at the start says 'Lewis' and Jez Nelson repeats this in his intro. Is 'Lewis' the way it should be said? Always, I thought it was 'Lou-ee'.

PPS: Jez Nelson alscho schays "moo-schik" and "moo-schisens" scho I schuppose zhere isch no right and no wrong anymore.

Keith Tippett called 3 solo recordings and a band "Mujician". When asked why, he said his little daughter had been asked, at school, "And what does your daddy do for a living?" and she replied, "He's a mujician".

        Lewie versus Lewis

In different versions of Hello Dolly Armstrong varies between the two. On the studio version it's Lewis with an exaggerated ...SSS. I read somewhere he preferred Lewie, which is to be expected from somebody from New Orleans I'd have thought, but most Americans go with Lewis.

if you haven't already catch this programme ...
it reinforced my high opinion of this group, exhilarating .. a strong gust of freshness and humour.... the saxophonist Jon Irabagon is amazing as well as Evans on trumpet .... and at last the name explained [a quote from Theremin about Stalin not being so bad ....mopdtk!]

the essay on Louis was good too ... you have until tonight

if i had been at the Vortex for this gig hackneyvi i am afraid i would have been very wiggly!

              "...wigginess': a Brit euphenism.

              Laurel & Hardy:

              Oliver Hardy (to Stan Laurel):

'You never get over your wild Corsican blood, do you?'

yes. thanks again for all the reminders ...

what sounded like someone called 'kevin o genre' .... and jez, didn't actually add an awful lot to discussion of the mopdtk set at the vortex imo. (although perhaps the r kirk comparison was the most apt)?

kevin's idea that mopdtk might be music of the fairground was inaccurate surely? i should imagine he may be meant 'circus music score', and in particular the sheer absurdity of clowning specifically. the anecdotes about pensylvania city names were interspersed with chat show style drum rolls ..and presumably, that was moppa elliott making the wise cracks about 'factoryville' ....where there's 'never been an actual factory' ... ironic..... and yet typical, familiar.

it was quite a long set, all considered... especially because of the fragmentation and frenetic pace ... but not 'too smart', (as suggested) unless you happened to arrive at the vortex entirely off guard, expecting to sit back, be complimented with soothing riffs. in which case, mopdtk would be a very rude awakening. 'a night in tunisia' was more like a high speed ambush, but a perfect finale, after listening to high jinx, and menacing aeroplane tricks on trumpet! especially as 'a night in tunisia' seemed to end the set with an infestation of insects, implying (to me) a life cycle complete. i guess, par for the course, predictable that 21st c protest music might be labelled 'too smart' though too! it's not 'too smart' imo, it certainly is 'too manic' though, but arguably that's a part of its precise purpose, as music.

(i noticed armstrong was referred to as 'louiSe' armstrong recently on r4 ...so, apparently there's some new confusion at the beeb, as to how to pronounce his surname. i'm pretty sure 'louiSe' is wrong, as pronounced this way, it's usually a girl's name....back then, and now! so, it's certainly not just mopdtk doing the absurd clowning around ....!

happily, it's evidently mopdtk's job to reflect the general status quo, and by self appointment. i think, as with whiskey, or wine .... a little goes a long way, and a little mopdtk might well go a long way towards relaxation, especially in tense times. in this sense, mopdtk are probably very appropriate, just what a ny antipsychiatrist might well order, in the name of preserving a patient's sanity, via controlled participation in the insane mania of mopdtk: facing our collective chaotic angst - together, for a welcome change! in this sense, mopdtk are undeniably 'smart', and the mania intrinsic to their remedy, ultimately sociable - and not the reverse.

                        a title?

well, serial apologist, i take it you didn't like mopdtk .... . i'd love to know why that is, and have tried to imagine what you might think!!?

but it's better if you express this personally!

in fact it would be intriguing imo to discuss mopdtk in this mb context, especially since jez and kev were a bit lack luster...and hackneyvi seemed unimpressed, and was actually present at the performance.

i gather calum da jazbo does like mopdtk, and appreciate his, and hackney's prompts to listen. obviously, listeners may easily have missed it, due to the previous cancellation of the broadcast, or confusion as to whether the noisy four piece is maybe made up of ex convicts..... or something!

Er - I just wondered, because what you wrote didn't make it clear to me, apart from that MOPDTK seemed an apt kind of musical commentary on our times.

My view fwiw is that underneath all the bash and bluster, the band is not really all that radical.

nope it is offering a running commentary on history, reflective, ironic, intelligent and exuberant .... that does me well enough ....

yes, mopdtk music is much better than feeling squashed, disengaged, and humourless any day...... and why shouldn't we laugh at our collective circumstances, and together?

better than fighting, competing with each other - especially when there's arguably xxxall to fight for ...which is why the explanation regarding the fascade of 'factoryville' was a balm, a tonic, and a joke simultaneously.

although (secretly) i wish mopdtk was jazzgirlz
