is that track off a whole cd? if so, what's it called?

i hope thompson's new compositions are going well ....she's lucky like that at least, as despite her illness, she can still create. has she got any new stuff out?

wyatt always sounds like terry hall, of 'the specials' fame to me. or at least, i should say .. terry sounds like robert, i guess.

wyatt seems such a rare and gentle personality. mr h's fave is 'shipbuilding' totp vid, where he sums up the whole 80s decade emotionally, ('beneath the (80s) bluster'- to quote you, from upthread there) but so very odd to see 'the specials' live, now re playing their 80s hits....and no new material. yet, a reflection of current times, is absolutely nailed in 'simplify reduce' lyric .....but the same currency is entirely absent from 'the specials' live set, unfortunately.

to cross thread a minute - the venue pictured in the vid to this track you posted, looks alot like how i imagine your evening last night, darn sarf! i totally agree regarding music ideally taking place in a venue that looks a shambles btw s a...... nothing like it. (a large ungainly domestic onstage lampshade is always a good sign in my book) though evidently the proms don't seem to have cottoned on - and are sticking to the orchestra pit having 'lapdancing lighting' ....apparently.

btw regarding harry beckett - if there's to be endless repeats on 'jazz library' - i'd love a repeat of the harry beckett edition. especially if we could effectively 'go round harry's flat' (virtually) as we could last time round. i loved that so much - not least, as it was intelligent use of online archive media and a really well researched prog, to boot. plus, harry's flat was ace, as is his trumpeting, and 'bluster-free' personality.

however, arguably 'bluster' has got its uses, and can get you everywhere. perhaps this is the decade of 'who blusters loudest wins'!

Barbara Thompson, I take it you mean HSF? Can't honestly say. Spoke to Jill Hiseman on the dog 'n' bone the other day after Jon sent me the very fine new DVD of Barbara's Germany gig with Paraphernalia, out soon, and she really just wanted to say Jon is his usual forever optimistic self. I'm very fond indeed of Barbara and Jon, and guessing what it must be like going through what she is is no less upsetting than several recent bits of news about relations etc.

Harry Beckett was another real sweetie I could bore the bored to bits with stories on - you're thinking of Elton Dean's flat, I presume?

The Annie Whitehead link must be from The Music Of Robert Wyatt concert at the Festival Hall in November 1999, part of the London Jazz Festival and broadcast on R3. I have it on cassette if you and Mr H are ever this way, though there might be a CD available. What makes me think it was from that event was because the line up included Ian Maidman when she was still Ian if you get me. I also posted the above link on a Proms thread, imagining cavatina dancing in the specially provided Albert Hall light show, fwsiw, ahem!

Serialist...HouseholdFortune: Being a SACD addict, a multi-channel surprise for me was Barbara Thompson's Saxophone Quartet No. 2 ('From Darkness into Light') appearing on disc: Invitation.

" The revelatory performance on the disc has to be that of the 2002 Saxophone Quartet No.2 "From Darkness into Light" by Barbara Thompson and it is also by far the most interesting composition contained here as well. In six movements Thompson attempts to depict a journey of colours in sound starting with black before progressing through red, blue - cool, green, yellow - butterflies before ending with white - peace; it has to be said that "green" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces that can have been written for saxophone to date. The rest of the quartet is just as evocative, if not as transcendentally beautiful; the agonies associated by Thompson with the colour red are vividly portrayed by her and excruciatingly well rendered by the Tetraphonics [Saxophone Quartet]."

tut - got my brass sections muddled i think - regarding annie and barbara..... (motto - never hoover up and type posts)! but nevertheless, do wonder about bt, especially after 'the hiseman' show on 'jl'. i wonder if bt'll post bits of german gig online?

elton dean's flat - no! so, elton dean's swirly golden/black jazzproof carpet, tons of photos (going up the stairs to flat), and many other delights. i feel like i've imagined, or dreamt the whole shebang now!

still, it was a good dream.

nevertheless, i would like a repeat of hb though ....and to see that lovely home again - (despite confusing who it belongs/ed to).

            > fwsiw <- now now - it's not her fault she's apparently suffering 'game-theory-itis'. ahem, though - it happens to the best of us..and tbf is sometimes accentuated on mbs. tbh i never actually located your mb spat s-a - so am actually referring to antagonistic comments about this forum being numerically larger.... but don't want to compromise ff in any way, so i'd best shut up.

suffices to say, quantitty quantitty, quantitty titley pomt ...do we ever hear anything else these days?

mostly other people do the quantifying, ....

which pretty much kills off all interest, ....at least as far as i can see.

and john's groovy african shirt.. which must've needed a good soak, after that gig, eh charles!

but unfortunately, i can only find the blues .... (no greens to be had).

Evan Parker's with Matthew Shipp tonight at the Vortex tonight, HSF; and tomorrow, when I'll be going, with Paul Dunmall. Hopefully someone with a hand-held and steady hand will be on-site both times, eh?!

              Great reply btw!

Thanks for those, handsome - particularly for the last one. Quite a few knocked Paul on the old board - clonetrane, etc., quite unjust imv. Give & take stuff, all made up on the spot in case....

I saw there's a clip of Paul playing with Mr Shipp on the right. Think I'll wait till my ship comes home.

[HF: what did you think of mopdtk charles t?]

Been an advocate of my fellow (native-born) Pennsylvanians long time now.

However, not heard same in person - and - it's very apparent that this group, in particular, must be caught in de flesh

                    for optimum appreciation.

Speaking of appearances...rationalizing like hell, why I will miss The Necks in an appearance in two weeks here in L.A. (Little Tokyo's Blue Whale Jazzclub). I live 50 miles north of the city and neither of us drives at night.

Telling myself that this Ozzie group's randomness... 'sideways' ...tangential alliance with 'the sound of surprise/Jazz' is definitely on the fringe.
