    Freddie Webster

Fascinating programme on the rarely recorded trumpeter Freddie Webster who influenced Miles Davis & Dizzy Gillespie:

Trumpeter Freddie Webster is one of the great lost-legend stories of jazz, significant because he influenced both Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, little-known because he recorded only a few scattered solos and because he died at the age of 30 in 1947.

    That looks good.

This is the first (and one of the few times) I heard Frankie Newton, Joe Turner (With Pete Johnson, Don Byas and Frankie Newton), "SK Blues, part 2". I bought this on an EP
in my yooof thinking it might be more Joe's Atlantic R&B sides, but it's earlier than that. But still very good.

This is really interesting. I think that there were some amazing soloists tucked away in the big bands around the late thirties and forties who have largely become forgotten with the passage of time. I have seen Webster's name pop up on numerous occasions and he is amongst those listed as playing for Lucky Millinder's band that I have . There are so many players who emerged in the early / mid forties who died either before they recorded or had the chance to make an impact. Andy Kirk junior was one player who similarly died through drugs but was supposed to be terrifically gifted but even amongst the players who did make it to record, I often feel that the likes of Clyde Hart and Charlie Christian would have made more of an impact with the advent of bop.

This tremendous performance by Freddie Webster(1916-47) on 'Yesterdays' with the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra really deserves to be better known:

Wonderful for us to have a 6+ minute track like that one from pre-LP days
