Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool - Documentary (2019)

The cognoscenti won't find much in Stanley Nelson's documentary that they don't already know, but those with partial or no knowledge of Davis will find it a useful packaging of his eventful and influential life. It is formed from Davis' own literary words (raspily voiced by actor Carl Lumby), documentary footage, and talking heads of those who lived, loved and worked with him. It does not shy away from revealing Davis' more unpleasant traits, his arrogance and violence towards women; his first wife Frances Taylor is especially frank in this regard (and she tells us several times what wonderful legs she has!). A chief gripe is that the music is not given space to speak for itself, the clips being too brief or voiced over - we are being told rather than shown, and this becomes wearing and rather sells the subject short.

It's on a limited cinema release but is jointly funded by the BBC, so may appear on TV at some time. Worth keeping an eye out for despite the shortcomings.

Thanks for this. His treatment of Frances was truly abhorrent, and not just her. It's now difficult to detach what he was as a person, an indulged & near sociopath, from the "art" but that's a personal judgement.

Ian Carr and Mike Dibb's 2001 2-part TV documentary covered this issue very well: "It was deliberate", Ian said, "I really wanted to give a special prominence to the women in Miles's life". He certainly succeeded, particularly with Frances and Shirley Horn. There are bits and pieces of it on youtube - luckily I've kept my VHS tapes; you can find it on here, but you need to sign up to IMDb.

Btw, Cannonball Adderley comes out of the Frances story as one of the very good guys, who stood up to Miles and told him to just fk off.

I did post a longer response but for some reason (my edit browser) it's dropped off. Anyway, here is Frances herself. There's a lot more, and from other women.

Fans of Miles Davis may remember some grainy old footage of the trumpeter shadowboxing in a gym sometime during the mid-1960s. It’s a clip that in previous docs has been used to stress Davis’s love for the sport, or complement any mention of the album he recorded in 1970 inspired by one of its prizefighters, […]

Is that because it's a Friday?

That would never have occurred to me, Bryn.

It had a v. good review on Organissimo (USA jazz forum) by someone who saw the premier and took part in the Q&A. And the trailer and director interviews look "sane" and comprehensive unlike that appalling Don Cheadle "dramatisation". So...

This is fantastic. And not just for the numerous versions of his voice from those who knew him.

Yep, thoroughly enjoyed. I liked the many excellent photos and footage. Good interviews too.
