    Jezzer: the early tapes

Been delving into 1980s London FM pirate radio stations recently, and found this via the Twitter: a rare (sic) recording from Jez Nelson's early broadcasting career. I leave it to you to decide if he's improved with age. He even manages to name-check Gilles Peterson in this clip whilst also getting the year wrong. This is a broadcast from September 1985.

Incidentally today (9 November) is the anniversary of K-Jazz's last broadcast. I never heard K-Jazz, though I did regularly listen to Starpoint FM which came later. Chris Phillips still owes me a Hank Mobley LP for winning a competition.

I wonder what happened to the noticeably west London accent then. Jezza must've taken elocution lessons in the mean time.

I thought that this thread was going to be about Jeremy Corbyn but seem to think he is an Elvis fan so would be surprised to see him mentioned on the jazz board.

Trivia: Did you know that Naga Munchetty plays jazz tumpet?

He's modulated the Hammersmith accent since those days. Does he still have the hat?

The way he came to get that hat is probably very strange and funny - isn’t it a nobby one in just the proper style?

Possibly in the Socialist Workers Party - the flat cap, with matching donkey jacket, being de rigueur back then, especially for the sisters. Us lot thought it was too workerist.
