Fred was fated not to be placed in care when his folks gave him his middle name!

      Looks like a fantastic gig.

I have posted about young pianist Connie Han previously but felt that this new interview in Downbeat was extremely telling regarding the status of jazz in 2023. She is playing at the Pizza Express in London at luncthime on 13th November 2022.

Of all of the interesting things Connie Han said during a recent interview, this was perhaps the most unexpected: “I will finally say publicly,” she asserted, “that I am so fucking sick of people comparing me to Keith Emerson.”…

Having listened to her music, she has bags of technique albeit her style is pretty conseravtive. Not over-whelmed but similarly not someone to be written off either. What I found very disappointing is the way that her music is being marketed , a point also raised within the Downbeat interview where the position of dummer Sherrie Marricle is used as a contrast. I think the interview is fascinating if somewhat depressing that she feels it necessary to present a provocative figure to get her music across. Her attitude is pretty shocking and more than cynical. Not too surprised that marketing jazz should have utlimately arrived at this position.

This was superb BTW. Am on the train back now, will type something up when I'm back home.

I've been following Paul since 1983, and in all his performances and collaborations, I don't feel he has ever let me down.

Not yet listed on the three sites cited but it is up on the Cafe OTO and Vortex Facebook pages. For those not aware, Jason suffered a severe stroke on October 7th this year.

Yes, thanks Bryn - hadn't heard about this. London Jazz News site reported Jason as recovering at home last week.

Event in Birmingham, United Kingdom by Tony Dudley-evans on Saturday, January 14 2023

'A superb improvising quartet in which Portuguese trumpeter Luis Vicente joins saxophonist Paul Dunmall, bass player Olie Brice and drummer Mark Sanders. The Abyssal Trio is a young group of improvisers with Tom Pountney on guitar and electronics, James Gardener on trumpet and Jonno Gaze on drums.'

                        I've got my ticket.

                          Tomorrow afternoon at Cafe OTO:

Recently debuting as a duo in late 2022 after many years of collaboration, Charbin & Prevost return to Café OTO for an improvised performance. Also on the bill, NO Moore, presents pre-prepared music (prepared air) with live guitar improvisation.

Looks good, although the second band took a big risk of a publicity misspell by adopting their name!
