If that applies to Manchester, it certainly ain't true of here in London, where "standards" are still very much the convenient lingua franca for many a one-off get together, and loved for that. Maybe you're ahead of us "oop there"! However, imv it's not the materials as such, but what you do with them, that matters - as illustrated by those amazing standards and standards-to-be renditions by Miles's quintet at the Plugged Nickel in '65, which two of us are always... plugging here on this forum.
