Ready Breckers down the Woods - with added Millett

    Sat 20 July
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

    5pm - J to Z
In his 50-year career, jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker has worked with the likes of Art Blakey and Jaco Pastorius, though he's perhaps best known for his fusion project the Brecker Brothers. He plays tracks that have shaped him as a musician, including music by Brazilian bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto, who died earlier this month, and alto saxophonist "Cannonball" Adderley.

Bossa Nova - capital letters or lower case? Is it a good question? I can never make up my mind on categories: bebop, or Bebop? rock or Rock? funk or Funk? To avoid conFusion I think I prefer capitals - Swing for the big band style, swing for how the music moves; but whichever way can get one into trouble. As for referencing others' quotes, when some writers capitalise and others don't - ho hum!

The American trumpet great shares his inspirations. Plus Melissa Aldana in session.

    12midnight - Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
The Miles Davis Quintet featuring John Coltrane produced a strong of classic recordings in the 1950s. Geoffrey Smith selects highlights.

    Mon 22 July
    11pm - Jazz Now

Soweto Kinch presents the Tony Woods Project in concert in Poole, Dorset, with the saxophonist joined by guitarist Mike Outram, vibes player Rob Millett, bassist Andy Hammill and drummer Milo Fell.

Ian's early jazz appreciation days may recall Tony Woods as part of the Southampton-based Ray D'Inverno group, playing wild and out alongside Tony Roberts. If my memory serves me, Tony W started out in jazz in Southampton, so this is geographically almost a return to the source; these days he's very much a leading part in the Richmond/Twickenham-based Way Out West Collective, a lovely friendly bunch which also includes people like Pete Hurt, Chris Biscoe and Kate Williams, daughter of the famous classical guitarist John, and hosts monthly gigs at the Bull's Head in Barnes and the Polish Centre in Chiswick. While Tony's mellowed a lot since those early days, and is popular with the older brigade for upholding "traditional virtues" as some call them, Mike Outram can play Wes Montgomery-esquely and Hard Rock-inspired, along with anything between.

On Jamie's show (Radio 2 - 9pm Tues 23rd) he talks to the NZ-born London-based singer-songwriter Jordan Rakel about his new album Origin; and that same evening's Late Junction (11pm) includes Bristol "Anarcho Jazz-Hop" band Binbag Wisdom. They must play recyled themes. Wheely???

A few weeks back at Kulturpalast Dresden I saw the award winner trumpeter Randy Brecker in concert with Nils Landgren (trombone, vocals), China Moses (vocals), Ada Rovatti (saxophone), Simon Oslender (piano, keyboards), Lars Danielsson (double bass), Wolfgang Haffner (drums).

Listening just now to the Chris Barber tribute to Bulgarian rhythms, I couldn't but help feel it was less Bartok than bar tick-tock. That said one can only have the greatest admiration for the lapsed Traddie for coming up with something that would probably have had one-time afficionados phoning in to the boss next day to report a "cziko" - what a solo, with its up-yours to the underlying metric structure! Roswell Rudd would surely have approved?!

By the way, Melissa Aldana, featured interviewee on J to Z, is a 30-year old, New York-domiciled Chilean tenor saxophonist - which hasn't been mentioned, unless I nodded off for a few seconds.

Oh, and I love it when the visiting Americans talking about their favourite recordings say, "You're listening to jay to ZED"
