How to Land then Stuff a Fat Suit and still Cope

    Sat 6 July
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

    5pm - J to Z
Jumoké Fashola presents a live performance by the 14-piece instrumental collective Fat Suit, recorded last month at the Glasgow Jazz Festival. An upcoming group on the Scottish jazz scene, their sound fuses rock, jazz and folk music. And celebrated UK vocalist Jacqui Dankworth shares music by artists that have inspired her career.

Jumoké Fashola presents the 14-piece collective Fat-Suit from the Glasgow Jazz Festival.

    12midnight - Geoffrey Smith's Jazz

A repeat of the Stuff Smith programme.

Geoffrey Smith surveys the exuberant career of Hezekiah 'Stuff' Smith

    Mon 8 July
    11pm - Jazz Now

Soweto Kinch presents a solo concert by American pianist Marc Copland, recorded in early May at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

I don't think it would be unfair to think of Marc Copland as America's John Taylor - or vice versa. I was going to say far off the mark but then the punnie dropped.

    If I may mention here:

    10 July - BBC Radio 4
9am - Soul Music: programme 1 of 5 Back to Black

Return of the series in which members of the public discuss the personal impact of a piece of music. The first instalment features Amy Whitehouse's 2006 recording Back to Black, a torch song to tragic love, addiction and loss.

FWIW my feeling has been that had Amy stuck by the jazz world she'd still probably be here now.

    Yes, indeed. RIP Amy.

I was sad to hear Geoff Nichols of the Avon Cities has passed away. I never ever heard him in the context of the ACs, though I do seem to remember him take part in a jam with some Bristol players, and was surprised to hear quite strong Miles Davis influences in his playing.

Geoff ran a small jazz record shop in Bristol, just off the Whiteladies Road, and I remember going in there and picking up some quite unusual recordings - one of which was an early ECM recording, "Output", by the German pianist Wolfgang Dauner, who to 1970s Fusion afficionados might be better known in connection with the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble, in which Barbara Thompson, Jon Hiseman, Ian Carr and Kenny Wheeler participated. This must have been around 1983, and when I asked Geoff how this managed to be among his shelves, he said it had probably been there since he'd ordered it for a customer and it had never been collected! It was there that I picked up my vinyl copy of John Stevens's Freebop - the amazing recording from the 1982 Bracknell Festival, my copy of which is showing signs of wear after innumerable spins - and I remember persuading Geoff to play it on the shop player, and him irritably wanting to know where the beat was and if this was where jazz was going, god help us all! When I pointed out the sheer brilliance of Peter King's alto solo, Geoff replied that he (Peter King) was the only person on the session actually playing in time!

A bit of a curmudgeon but actually a nice bloke, man of learning to judge by his Guardian obit (attached), written by his son, and probably less musically prejudiced than the impression he could give.

Oh, and no relation to Maggie Nicols, whose name still gets misspelt in articles, after all these years.

      R.I.P. Geoff

The opposite of "Back in the Day" ??

Tangenitally she was a friend to Pete Docherty. He was very upset at the internet abuse he got when his name was reduced in the style of Flo-jo, Su-bo and J-Lo
