Dave Bartholomew RIP, New Orleans R&B, Fats et al....

"Dave Bartholomew, a trumpeter, composer and bandleader whose uncanny ability to spot and nurture promising performers, most notably Fats Domino, helped stamp New Orleans’ imprint on the developing genre of rock ‘n’ roll, died Sunday morning (June 23) at East Jefferson General Hospital, according to his son Ron. Mr. Bartholomew was 100.

“It’s virtually impossible to imagine the New Orleans musical canon without the impact of Dave Bartholomew,” Michael Hurtt wrote on www.ponderosastomp.com. “His devastating influence has charted the course of the city’s jazz, rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, soul and funk sounds for well over 50 years.”

Certainly influenced me because it was the early Fats Domino records and albums my elder brother brought back from the States that got me into jazz in the first place.

    RIP.

Fats Domino - "So Long" 1955. One of my all time http://youtu.be/nqIL-EvQ9H8desert island discs. Lovely floating alto solo from Wendell Duconge (sp), great Fats.

Btw, I've long thought that alto solo was a "nod" to a Jay McShann record, Wendell was a huge admirer of Bird.

Really sad to hear the news...bad couple of weeks for New Orleans following Dr John's death. Love 'The Monkey Speaks His Mind'. One of my all time favourites.
