yep hit that spot with me as well oddball ...
juts listened for the second time and feel that this was a highly superior presentation, in particular the exposition of technique and knowledge of Jo Jones was excellent and sympathetic ... and the music was just olympianLast edited by aka Calum Da Jazbo; 17-07-11, 14:51.According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

agreed, what a unique programme 'jazz library' was this week.
i thought the 'jl' percussionist guest, richard pyte, did a particularly deft job, in demonstrating the 'compartmentalisation' of the drum kit, in the 30s, as a part of describing joe jones's enigmatic style, and personal history.
it was great to hear of 'press rolls, choke cymbals, rim shots and high hats' and who played what, over them. useful too as it saved acres of verbal explanation, minus practicle example.
i've been looking forward to posting this link (below), now's perfect! the whole series is a forgotten treasure imo. all humph's episodes of 'born to swing' are available on utube, if you look.
here, joe jones shows what he did for a living, after his departure from the top, in setting up a drum workshop, and teaching the next gens drums. 'jl' excerpt suggested jones's voice is odd 'because he's squiffy' ... but it's just his voice i reckon. jones's point that 'there's nothing new under the sun' is so true, and the way he ushers in solo accompaniments is just so unlike how drummers behave today. although it's arguably exagerated, mannered, showy, it's also deeply sociable.
of late, i've appreciated the recent drum analysis on 'jl' progs in general. in particular, drummer john hiseman made some good points, although they got a bit lost amongst the discussion, on here, about (awful) taste in a 60s white blues artist, iirc.
both hiseman and guest percussionist on 'jl', richard pyte, make a similar point, about the 'non progress' of drums, due to the direction of rock/pop. contemporary drum styles being compared with a keep fit fanatic 'working out on a gym exercise machine'. imo this applies to rock especially.
'joe jones's sextet' track, called 'caravan', (featuring eastern sounding clarinet), reminded me of jez's interview with shebaka hutchins, and his recent musical direction.. within the 'sons of kemet' set, seb rochford (plus another drummer) also continued 'a conversation about drums', of sorts. though imo about digital drums' influence on their playing, as well as 'the sons' having a stab at the very antithesis, the uber earthy 'rasta man chant'.
i missed the 'jl' mentioned, apparently on max roach .... and can't find it in the recent archive at least ...i wonder, did anyone else hear it?

thanks for that oddball!
i remember the 'jl' episode now, (along with links to abbey lincoln obituaries). perhaps a max roach repeat is in order on this occasion, as a part of the 'jl drumfest'?
