Byas'd Opinion
"The Satin Album" by Bobby Wellins (75 yesterday). Instrumental versions of the songs from Billie Holiday's "Lady in Satin". Lovely stuff. http://www.jazzizit.co.uk/albums/The%20Satin%20Album
The sleeve's pretty ordinary, though.

Having followed the output of this Californian who lived just up the road from here, I was just amazed at the scope of the writing in this release.
You know how albums tend to resemble each other, as if a 2010 release for example, sounds like a continuation of a 2009 one...especially if the same musicians are utilized (Craig Taborn...who is a par excellance session pianist...and the stand-up bass playing of Scott Colley.) Brian Blade is in a category all by himself.
Anyways, it is not simply the addition of the horn section that marks Third Occasion as a high-water mark for Binney. No, it is the broad scope of the writing - especially beautifully utilized on the three tunes on the cd that are all in excess of 10 minutes.
Sorry, you just have to hear it for yourself. Really typifies the saying that: "Jazz is the sound of surprise'!
