Wondered if you had checked out Christophe Dal Sasso's new disc "Pretextes" being a fan of the likes of Gunther Schuller. Evidence that the Third Stream movement continues in thrive in contemporary jazz circles.
A few samples are available on this site - think this will definately be your cup of tea.

Spinning this today:
I'm not a great McLaughlin aficionado, but it is a terrific album, and I hadn't listened for a while. (I was reminded of it by a YouTube video of him in the 80s playing Cherokee on a US chat show, on a nylon strung guitar, in front of the house band. A curiosity rather than a great moment in jazz).

Have caught John Mac with four editions of Mahavishnu Orch...including an extremely loud original version at The Whiskey A Go Go...also the string outfit with Ponty and later outfits with the grooving sax of Bill Evans.

Thanks for that, Calum. I didn't know Rough N Tumble. I'll have to look it out.
I knew his work with Jimmy Smith, of course, and with Kenny Burrell (one of my favourite guitarists), the CTI stuff. My favourite Blue Note album of his is Never Let Me Go.

I share your enthusiasm for Stanley Turrentine and I would suggest that you also check out the wonderful , gospel inspired record he made for Blue Note called "Joyride" where he is backed by an all-star big band directed by Oliver Nelson. Kenny Burrell is on this record too but the disc is also worth the money for Herbie Hancock's lesson in how to comp behind a soloist. Few jazz pianists are as effective as Hancock in this respect and whilst the arrangements are in the same vein as the charts written for Smith and Wes Montgomery, it is difficult not to enjoy the general good-natured feel of Nelson's writing. The CD is still available if a little steep for an old issue. Great record, non-the-less.
