Previously unreleased Charles Mingus recordings from 1973.

"The long lost tapes capture Mingus at a week-long residency at Strata Concert Gallery in Detroit in 1973. His group line-up features drummer Roy Brooks, trumpeter Joe Gardner, pianist Don Pullen and saxophonist John Stubblefield. Hitherto in the possession of Brooks's wife Hermine, the recordings found their way to BBE and 180 Proof records who are co-releasing the set, 'Jazz in Detroit/Strata Concert Gallery/46 Seldon' on November 2."

    From The Wire(November 2018).

As announced by Quincy Jones' QWEST TV, BBE Music unearths intimate concert tapes from one of the greatest jazz musicians in history, Charles Mingus.

GOOD piece on this just up on Richard Williams' "Blue Moment blog...

"Just about everything that was great about Mingus was on display at the Strata Concert Gallery at 46 Selden Street in Detroit's Midtown. The band is superb: Joe Gardner on trumpet, big-toned and confident; John Stubblefield on tenor, bringing to mind the fluent bluesiness of Hank Mobley; the mercurial Don Pullen on piano, brilliantly spanning the eras as many of Mingus's pianists (Jaki Byard, Roland Hanna) were expected to do; and Brooks himself, providing an unflagging, explosive drive...

..."This was a club gig, so the atmosphere is relaxed and the customers' voices are sometimes heard. But it was recorded on multi-track equipment and broadcast on a local radio station, WDET-FM, so the balance of informal atmosphere and undistorted instrumental sound is just about perfect..."

    ******

I've also just seen on Organissimo that there's a live Dexter Gordon Paris gig from 1977 just discovered and released...with Pierre Michelot, Kenny Clarke and...AL HAIG. Supposedly peak Dexter and although Haig was (allegedly) a deeply unpleasant piece of work, he could certainly play.

      Many thanks, BN.
Richard Williams is usually on the money and will order that 5-CD Mingus set on the strength of his review.
Also tempted by the 1977 Dexter Gordon with pianist Al Haig.
Haig is also on Chet Baker's 1958 album 'In New York' with Johnny Griffin on three tracks.
Here's their version of Benny Golson's 'Fair Weather':
