    The Jazz Session is back

I've loved this podcast since discovering it about 10 years ago. It is almost always really interesting, even when the music is not quite to my taste. Just musicians talking about their lives, work and the jazz world in general. Jason Crane is a very good podcast host and very knowledgable.

It is now back after a break of over a year. Give it a listen. The website contains a treasure-trove of contemporary US jazz interviews.

It is strange that you mention Jason Crane's podcast as I have listened to it in the past too. There seems to be a range of jazz styles offered and he does manage to speak to some serious musicians. However, I got the impression that some musicians were biting their tongues when chatting to him. I did wonder if he was an amateur or just a fan doing this.

There is another weird podcast called "The jazz bastards" which I have listened to on a few occasions. It is interesting because it is a record review programme although they sometimes do features on a style of jazz. Although one of the blokes sounds like Kermit, they seem to speak the unspeakable and are quite hostile towards some artists. Seem to recall Jacob Bro and Gregory Porter both getting a kick in on one programme I listened to. Quite amazed that the criticism can be so harsh on that podcast. I haven't listened to it for a long while but it is a surprise if you are not used to it.

Oh yes, there are some seriously over-endowed sociopaths who are having a wail of a time with social media. They're nihilists - one of my school friends coined a nice term for such people - negatrons.

According to his website, he had presented a number of Jazz shows on radio in the US and the podcast grew from that. He tried to produce it full-time as a crowdfunded programme but that failed and he appears to have had some sort of breakdown. Read his blog. I'm amazed he kept it going so long, but it's great to have the show back.

Does this matter, Ian? Given the paucity of "professional" Jazz broadcasters and programmes, isn't an amateur (if that is what he is) taking matters into his own hands and doing something positive about it something to be celebrated? And, even if you are correct in your "impression that some Musicians were biting their tongues when chatting to him", they are at least "chatting to him" - and "some" of them are, as you say, "serious".

Give the bloke a knighthood, I say - and at least wish him well after his illness.
