I enjoyed the Monnette Sudler track on JRR - a thrilling bass solo reflecting the advances that had been made in the 60s in a relatively straight-ahead context is sadly something you don't often get today - you need to go to the freer end for that. Hadn't previously heard of Ms Sudler - has Ian mentioned her before? - reminded me of one of our own, Ray Russell.

Yes, that was very tight. I'd never heard of her either, impressive. Thought the Blue Mitchell "Folks" was lovely, but then I've always really liked his ballad playing. Thought the Paul Butterfield "Work Song" was ***** and that's not five stars. Amateur hour at the Top Rank Cardiff 1963. Enjoyable otherwise though as per usual.

*Good afternoon's programming with Carlos Acosta up before declaiming "no more tights for me!" now that he no longer (ballet) dances, but rather produces. Won't get far in today's UK Green Party with an attitude like that Carlos!

      BN.

Missed the first 45 mins of JRR (see General Arts thread Duet for One), enjoyed the last 15 mins in the car on the way home. Was disappointed to find that J to Z was a completely unedited repeat of the first ever Jay to Zed. Surely the introduction and the final reference to the up coming Jazz Now could have been updated!
