Buy George, get your VJ shellac, and blow your own Horn

    Sat 15 Sept
    4pm - Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton presents a selection of listeners' sequences to highlight the wonders of jazz history.

    5pm - J to Z
East Coast jazz star Vijay Iyer shares his musical inspirations, including a haunting recording by the late American pianist Geri Allen and a rhythmically inventive Prince track. Saxophonist Camilla George plays music from her forthcoming album The People Could Fly. Born in Nigeria and based in London, George draws inspiration from both backgrounds. Presenter Kevin Le Gendre plays some classic tracks and new releases.

    12midnight - Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
Among jazz vocalists, Shirley Horn was in a class of her own, casting a unique spell with hushed, intimate interpretations that were adored by the likes of Miles Davis. Geoffrey Smith surveys the career of a connoisseur's favourite.

And I very nearly typed "favourite things"!

    On Sun 16 Sept
    Radio 2 - 9pm - Clare Teal

A broad spectrum of big band and swing, tonight introducing a new feature, That's Life, in which listeners discuss swing recordings of personal significance.

I hope this went past Esther Rancid first!

    Mon 17 Sept
    11pm - Jazz Now

Soweto Kinch presents another chance to hear Christian Scott in concert at Ronnie Scott's in 2017.

It doesn't state this programme as being a repeat.

I thought J to Zee was definitely back on track again today - for me not one duff track in fact: beautiful piano trio stuff from Ivo Neame, who surely continues John Taylor's inheriitance better than any other, taking it in his own direction; some nice not too pushy Camilla George alto (shame the great trumpeter Quentin Collins was not with her on this occasion, though - she mentioned him as being on her new record); (oh, and drummer Winstone Clifford is always so good); and Vijay Iyer reminding me that contemporary jazz at its best really is my musical home. Maybe I'm over-compensating for the miserable times - I've been feeling quite choked up.

Keep it up, J to Zee!

I caught a bit of the programme between football and Waitrose but would have to admit the Phrenosis track left me cold. It is interesting hearing you reference John Taylor. I much preferred the Camilla George set (how much better was that than the embarrassing Laura Jurd!! ) I think that the likes of Ivo Neame are so typical of a lot of what is happening in jazz piano . The music takes its cues from European classical music and exhibits an incredible amount of technique but this kind of jazz is now pretty ubiquitous. It does worry me that it doesn't particularly swing but the lack of earthiness / edge is my main concern. Piano trios just seem to sound less and less like jazz now. The music is too clean. In some ways it is very impressive whereas in others I just sometimes wish they would get down and play a blues.

Well I think this is pretty damn good, and very much a follow-on from pieces by John Taylor such as his "Sweet & Simple". Oh, and it's got one of our friends on sax; and Dave Hamblett is highly regarded by quite a few drummers of my generation:
