The still underrated Paul Bley recorded several versions of Carla Bley's haunting 'Ida Lupino' and this solo piano performance from 'Open To Love'(ECM) is probably the best IMHO.

The only version I'd heard of Ida Lupino was the one on Turning Point. I really should get more Paul Bley. As a jazz pianist friend of mine pointed out to me many years ago, he really was the one who started that phrasing against the beat the Jarrett, John Taylor and Django Bates do so well, I feel. I can't do it for toffee, and I know quite a few other jazz pianists, well known too, who also admit to the same thing. Jarrett over-romanticised, almost sensationalised the approach - which after all comes close to what we used to call "the primitive blues" - but with Bley one somehow feels the university of hard knocks and any romanticism is hard-earned.
