The Miller's Tale is Snow use in a Heatwave

Apologies for short notice posting this week, due to my having been out all yesterday.

First to mention the final listed work on today's New Generation Artists, (12.15- 1pm) Hermeto Pascoal's Misturada, given that it features five of the best from N. London's Loop Collective: Misha Mullov-Abbado (bass) Rob Luft (guitar) Corrie Dick and Sam Watts (drums) together with Sam Rapley (tenor sax).

More of this to come between 10.30-11pm next Tues, 17 July

    4pm - Jazz Record Requests
Alyn Shipton's [sic] presents listeners' requests, including music by saxophonist Benny Golson.

    5pm - J to Z
Bass guitar icon Marcus Miller reminisces about his first day in the studio with Miles Davis and breaks down tracks that have inspired him over the years. Including music by pianist Herbie hancock and the godfather of slap bass Larry Graham. Plus Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski in concert and new music from saxophonist Charles Lloyd.

The best in jazz - past, present and future. With bassist Marcus Miller.

    12midnight - Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
To mark Bastille Day, Geoffrey Smith celebrates the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Spearheaded by Gypsy genuis of the guitar Django Reinhardt and the stylish violin of Stéphane Grappelli, the Hot Club Quintet proved you didn't have to be American to play great jazz.

(You don't have to be French, either.

    Mon 16 July
    11pm - Jazz Now

Soweto Kinch presents Lauren Kinsella and Snow Poet in concert at the Turner Sims Theatre in Southampton, featuring Josh Arcoleo (saxophone), Matthew Robinson (piano), Nick Costley-White (guitar), Chris Hyson (bass), Dave Hamblett (drums), Alice Zawadski (violin) and Francesca Ter-Berg (cello). Plus music by Laura Jurd and Dinosaur from the BBC's Biggest Weekend.

I saw Snow Poet here a few years ago and was deeply impressed with the originality of the materials and arrangements, and the freedom - Ms Kinsella locating herself in the Norma Winstone lineage, Josh Arcoleo, Matt Robinson and, of the youngsters, probably the most admired among the older generation of drummers, Dave Hamblett, once more being products of the "Loopy" scene of a few years ago in and around Kentish Town. Ian might kick himself if he missed this local gig.

    Tues 17 July - Radio 2
    8pm - Jamie Cullum

New and classic jazz, plus studio guests, tonight with guitarist, band leader and composer Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick discussing his career starting in the 1970s, from forming British funk band Light of the World to leading acid jazz ensemble Incognito. he also discusses his collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Terry Callier.

Of interest in tracing some of the roots of the Jazz Warriors phenomenon 10 years further down the road as well, I would imagine.

BASTILLE DAY...."For how long will the rage of despots be called justice, and the people’s justice be called barbarity or rebellion?" - Robespierre.

Somewhat appropriate after yesterday's feted Trumping. First time I've ever felt some sympathy with the Queen.

JRR looks promising..."I like a bit of Benny" as James Fox not quite said to Jagger in "Performance".
