Not sad to see a lack of interest in rap.

Pitty about the lack of interest in mainstream jazz and hardbop at these festivals and big promoted shows. Down at the grassroots of the pub jam sessions they are the bread & butter. And my bet is that most player's jazz cd collections are dominated by the old Blue Note recordings.
Only Stanfordian's would be my bet!

It is an interesting situation, I think and perhaps driven by demographics. The gigs seems to attract a wide range of ages with no one generation dominating albeit you sense the people under 25 are usually students. A lot of younger children seem to be encouraged to listen. I was quite intrigued to hear the Polish group perform on J-Z tonight because this group is so typical of what I have heard in the past and, to a lesser extent, over the last fortnight. This almost seems like the current facsimile for piano trios these days and I was pleased to hear stuff that seemed top return back to the routes with the likes pf Christian Sands. A Canadian piano teacher I spoke to at length was pretty dismissive of this kind of stuff because he saw it as being more akin to pop music than jazz in it's purest sense. This is one of the groups that performed and it sums up the current malaise. The band are just vamping over really simple changes and my colleague reserved a lot of criticism for this band.

I think the whole "Real book" thing is only of interest for pub jam sessions. I can't see younger fans checking out material that it at least 40 years old. A lot of the criticism I encountered came from people older than me and I would tend to take their view. this is the kind of stuff that appeals to younger fans. I had never heard of this Canadian groups before but it is what the youngsters are listing and dancing to. They are not checking out Hank Mobley, that is for sure!! Personally, I find this group to be pretty boring but judge for yourself:-
