    Today, 30 April 2018, IS International JAZZ Day...

    No, I didn't know either but it is. UNESCO says so.

    "Remember...

    "Why Jazz?
    Jazz breaks down barriers and creates opportunities for mutual understanding and tolerance;
    Jazz is a vector of freedom of expression;
    Jazz is a symbol of unity and peace;
    Jazz reduces tensions between individuals, groups, and communities;
    Jazz fosters gender equality;
    Jazz reinforces the role youth play for social change;
    Jazz encourages artistic innovation, improvisation, new forms of expression, and inclusion of traditional music forms into new ones;
    Jazz stimulates intercultural dialogue and empowers young people from marginalized societies"

    Jazz also promotes hair growth, improves cognitive ability, reduces cholesterol, does more miles to the gallon, makes fish smile, ducks swim in circles, and many many more "things".

    Always read the label, do not exceed the stated dose. Be kind to banjos.

    BN.

      The people who organise the jazz festival in Winchester arranged at jam session yesterday at the Railway Tavern to celebrate the event but the e-mail advertising it was sent at 18.22 with no notice whatsoever, notwithstanding the fact that I was still in the office when it would have started. It think that it is easy to be cynical but this is an event I would have supported. Incidentally, The Railway Tavern is the premier music venue amongst the pubs in Winchester and has been in the Hampshire Chronicle of late regarding a problem with funding which is threatening live gigs. In this instance, it would have been worth supporting for two reasons.

      On the whole, the publicity for this has been poor or last minute at best. I don't know what events have been held elsewhere but I sometimes think the jazz community does not help itself by arranging things either at the last minute or without good community.
