Keith Tippett Colston Hall gig, 21 April, cancelled

Just received facebook notification that this double gig has had to be cancelled, the post (but not the formal cancellation notification from the venue) stating that Keith is a "very unwell man". In two parts, the first was to have been a duet session with Matthew Bourne, and the second a performance of Keith's Nine Dances of Patrick McGonogon, one of his most recent and ambitious works, by the KT Octet.

Let's all wish Keith a return to full health.

With THAT I can totally agree. Hope he's OK soon.

Just to keep in in our thoughts, here's a downloadable link to one of the best conversations I had on Jazz Library. Have been friends with Keith for a long time - I think this comes across in the chat...http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qn1m0

News is that Keith has been in hospital with a previous coronary-related pneumonia condition. He's now back home but likely to be out of action for some considerable time for recovery. An email address has been given for money support offerings, but my computer is telling me it could be dodgy!

....Keith went to the same school as me :Greenway (bloody) Boys Southmead , Bristol [Pen Park (lovely but dangerous) Girls....1 mile down the road]....he was six years older than me....his brother Thomas 2 years younger....absolutely no recollections at all Though Thomas was nice gentle chap, played soprano cornet. A very studious family considering the rough house nature of surrounding estate....I later of course after a first class education became a famous academic....

Fancy - what a small world! Keith makes a lot of his background - his dad a copper, his mum of Irish descent.

Martin Archer, the Sheffield-based saxophonist and owner of the Discus Music recording label, has written this morning on the British Jazz site to report having spoken with Keith by phone, and this is just to confirm he's back home and likely to be in recovery mode for some time to come. The "Nine Dances of Patrick O'Gonogon" is released on Martin's label, and he's encouraging us to obtain it direct from him rather than another channel for reasons I demur from mentioning as it would brazenly involve "advertising"; you can find his website on the Net without difficulty.

"There are two ways to help Keith...

Hazel Miller who runs Ogun Records, the label she co-founded with her husband, bassist Harry Miller, who also appeared on Islands, has made this appeal on behalf of Keith.

"Dear Ogun Friends around the world,
I am pleased to say our friend, Keith Tippett has survived another heart attack and pneumonia but is now able to return home. His recovery however will mean that we shall be deprived of his wonderful music for at least another few months as he will not be able work.

Ogun records, to which Keith has contributed so much over the past decades has started a rescue fund to help the Tippett family over this difficult period.

Any contributions will be gratefully accepted and can be sent to: the Ogun PayPal a/c using the ogun email address: ogunrecords@googlemail.com.

I will ensure that it will be forwarded to Keith as soon as possible,
Many thanks for your help and consideration,

                Hazel Miller

                21st April 2018"

Thanks Bluesnik - I couldn't make the link to Hazel via Facebook for some reason.

Not good news about Keith, I'm sorry to have to report. A friend of his who helps out with getting Keith to places reports that he has recently experienced damage to one of his hands, as a result of a falling object (not specified). Being as Keith is on Warfarin for his heart condition, bleeding would not stop.

This is as much as I am given to know. Let's hope he's on the mend, on what one gathers looks likely to be a long job, and send him and Julie our "virtual" good wishes.
