Yes - Jo Jones, Max Roach, Elvin Jones .....

Otherwise the Jazz drummer I happen to be listening to at the moment. I don't think I've ever heard a bad Jazz drummer ......

Elvin Jones said Ringo "had something". What, I don't remember.

Reminds me of the old joke that when someone named him the best drummer, someone replied that Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles!

Or indeed the Ruttles scene in which they select a new drummer to replace the 'Best' and need to find a suitable stage name for him. Eventually the other Ruttles exclaim "You're in", and thus they become John, Paul, George and Urine.

                    I'd forgotten about the Ruttles!

                          Thanks Joseph and ferney.

I read the thread a day or two ago but was going from memory today on account of being very, very tired.

What a funny list (the original one, I mean (http://www.marlbank.net/4169-20-jazz-drum-greats.html). It's common, I've found, for (presumably) younger jazz enthusiasts to have a blind spot anywhere further back than about 1950, and not surprisingly, Roy Haynes the only drummer in the list born before about then. (I had a similar experience when I posted on another site my list of favourite rhythm sections).

Here are some of the missing greats, not, I think, mentioned hitherto in this thread, and in only approximately chronological order:

                              Jo Jones
                              Paul Barbarin
                              Baby Dodds
                              Sonny Greer
                              Davey Tough
                              Max Roach
                              Art Blakey
                              Tiny Kahn
                              Don Lamond
                              Shadow Wilson
                              Kenny Clarke
                              Pete La Roca
                              Mel Lewis

And that's just a few. Of more modern drummers, I'd add Idris Muhammad and Lewis Nash.
