    Jazz FM - thoughts?

To my mind for the pure jazz lover, it plays more than it used to. Hardly any smooth jazz these days.

Anybody else listen? Or do you think it's the CFM equivalent for jazz.

I used to listen more actually when it play more smooth jazz on national DAB years ago. If I want a jazz fix now I tend to go to TSF Jazz in France, but of course then I don't get the education.

Haven't listen to Jazz FM for years. But TSF is still pretty good and does carry some live stuff in the evenings. There's a bit more chat now around the hour but it dates back to the heyday of French jazz radio when Frank Tunot was beaming Antibes, Charles, Coltrane, Miles etc, which was certainty educational to me.

Interesting - from memory TSF was formed out of some stations owned by socialists? By education I just meant I don't garner many facts, my French is not that good...

Yes, I think TSF came jointly from the French Socialist and Communist parties (that must have quite a meeting!). Frank Tunot was the guy that brought Ray Charles first to France and also John Coltrane (he was in the Atlantic studio when My Favourite Things was recorded). He also (with Daniel Filipacchi) produced Salute Les Coupins which was a hugely influential French "pop" and beat radio show in the early 60s. I used to race home from school to listen to it as they would shove Mose Allison, Jimmy Smith, Ray Charles etc in among the Francoise Hardy! And why not.

Btw, if you want educational Jazz Radio, try WKCR (Columbia Univ Radio) in the mornings where Phil Schapps will talk for hours on what Charlie Parker had for breakfast and who he met on the way to the studio. And then play all 13 takes of April in Paris!

Not sure if I could listen to jazz in that way, but thanks, all the same, for the link, CGR.

Yes, it would be fine for train journeys. My problem would be the relatively arbitrary selections on offer. With Jazz Record Requests one is presented with different people's choices, as opposed to one person's, I suppose.

Love it:-) Listen to Dinner Jazz a lot in the evenings. Used to like James Torme Sunday pm (Thora Hird's grandson ?!?) It's very southern (that's UK southern) very business focused, but that may be to do with southern based sponsors and advertisers like Mishcon de Reya and Taylor's port. Keep meaning to buy a coffee mug with their funky chameleon logo on. They may be in London but they've been the only station promoting the Scarborough Jazz Festival.
And the tune ends too soon for us all

Find Jazz FM very uneven. The late evening programmes may offer a continuous stream of reasonable quality Jazz (listening to Helen Mayhew at the moment), but all too often, it's just female soul singers and worn out classics.

The big advantage of Jazz FM is that I just have to switch the radio on to listen to it.

Don't listen to Jazz FM as we can't get DAB here so no access to Jazz FM other than through the internet. The curator of the Scarborough Jazz Festival is of course the indomitable Alan Barnes. He is certainly spends a lot of time in the North, though. I don't know how he keeps up is schedule - only the other evening he was gigging with David Newton in a village hall near Morpeth!
