R2 and R3 have the same problem - they get round it by not playing them very much!

I proposed a while back that there should be a general 'Talking About Music' board which would accommodate various genres. At the moment TAM coexists with a number of 'classical' boards, but in effect is simply another classical board. In the same way, Jazz and World boards would coexist if the TAM brief were widened.
My proposal was politely rejected. But the aim was to keep the Jazz and World boards 'purist' - for the purists .

Looking at the list of Threads on the TaM, it does include obits for figures from the Pop & Rock scenes, and the "What RockyPoppy Stuff R U Listening 2 Now" Thread - so it is being used to accommodate "other" Musics, as well as being "simply another classical board". Perhaps the list of Sub Forums makes people think it's "classical-only"? Not sure what we can do about that ... or that we really need do anything.

But - if the majority feeling says otherwise ...

Nope. It's nice to have a board dedicated to Jazz.

I have no interest in 'World Music' - seems a rather silly name since isn't all music of this world?

aaah does that include the music that my wife calls "Scandinavian not-jazz" (the ECM type stuff that some of the "Jazzheads" don't like)

Don't have any problem with there being both jazz and world music boards and some threads being on both. Combining boards could eventually lead to one board only named "Stuff" -difficult to locate your interests

I have no wish to or intention of merging World Music and Jazz Boards, but would be interested to hear others' thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Hence my question in response to Vespare's suggestion.

Perhaps also I regard the 'genres' of music a continuum rather than pigeonholes!

No - but then neither is "Classical" (Concerto, Symphony, String Quartet ... ) I think it's a "shorthand" ... for ... errrm ... "style"? "Tradition[s]"??

i regard "Classical" as shorthand for European based Art music, but World Music can include Classical music of a non European background like Indian Ragas, Flamenco, fusions like Afro Jazz and local variants of pop like Moroccan hip hop or Japanese reggae - used, perhaps misused, as a term for folk and "rest of the world" music.
