Barnes storm ahead - no Bull

    Sat Jan 20
    4pm Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton introduces another selection of listener jazz requests of various styles, including a track from the newly released album by saxophonist Alan Barnes and pianist Dave Newton.

All things jazz for all demographics.

    5pm Jazz Line-Up
Kevin Le Gendre presents a performance by vocalist Anthony Joseph and his band, fusing Caribbean sounds with poetry and jazz. Recorded on the Jazz Line-Up stage at the Southbank Centre as part of the 2017 London Jazz Festival.

A performance by vocalist Anthony Joseph, who mixes Caribbean sounds with poetry and jazz.

    12 midnite Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
Geoffrey Smith surveys the career of pianist Keith Jarrett, whose solo concerts, crossover projects and best-seling Standards Trio have earned him widespread acclaim.

I hope I won't get sued for reproducing that "crossover" tag.

The legendary career of jazz superstar and cult figure, pianist Keith Jarrett.

    Mon Jan 22
    11pm Jazz Now

Soweto Kinch presents a concert by Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and his quartet recorded at the Royal Festival Hall during the 2017 London Jazz Festival.

Soweto Kinch presents Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola and his quartet in concert.

(For any fans of Finnish music mythologies who just happen to be reading this, Pohjola's Daughter was not composed on Sibelius. )

Well, Serial, that headline really had me worried: was the Bull's Head about to close? Noooo, I thought - until I looked at the actual post. You rotter!

I was going to type that that was a name I haven't heard for ages but I was confusing him with Johnny Barnes. ( As opposed to John Barnes - the football playing Rapper.) Johnny Barnes was really prominent when I first got in to jazz and seemed to bridge the Traditional / Mainstream idioms. I was first aware of him when he worked with the Midnite Follies Orchestra in the early 1980's but I haven't heard of him for years. Wondered if he was still going?

Not heard Alan Barnes for ages although I have enjoyed some of his releases, the meeting with Tony Kofi being an unexpected delight. I always think of Trevor Cooper whenever I see AB's name mentioned and Cooper always seemed to heap opprobrium upon him for some reason whilst lauding some obscure musician who ceased recording in 1957. Totally unwarranted.

John Barnes is still with us but not at all well, having never quite recovered from a stroke in 2011.
