I s'pose Dave might have started a lot of people on Jazz. I guess once you get to a certain age and there ain't many certain ages above 90, you are beyond criticism. I enjoyed Take 5 at the time. Happy Birthday Dave.

...if anyone caught Rbreakfast this morning Rob played a storming version of Caravan by the Brubeck Quartet from 1979 ... thanks Rob

he first of three Concord LPs by this particular edition of the Quartet (with Jerry Bergonzi on tenor, Chris Brubeck doubling on electric bass and trombone, and drummer Butch Miles, whose successor would soon be Randy Jones), found Brubeck enthusiastically playing three of his originals along with the standards "Yesterdays," "Caravan" and "The Masquerade Is Over." Bergonzi's Coltrane-influenced tenor gave this unit a different sound than the earlier Quartets and meshes surprisingly well with the pianist/leader.

Take Five was definitely barred in the school Jazz Hole of '62. The point where DB broke down in the Ken Burns series, relating returning from WW2 to see blacks branded with irons like livestock, led me to reassess, but however lovely the guy the music still labours in these ears.

...not an uncommon reaction to his music S_A but he is committed to the legacy and many musicians listened to what he was doing musically if not always to his playing ... one for fans:

Jazz giant Dave Brubeck turns 90 this month. In this 1997 session, Brubeck and host Marian McPartland perform duets in "Just You, Just Me" and Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way."
