Those you have loved, with upgraded Happy New Ears attached

    Sat30 Dec
    4 pm Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton's selection includes listeners' suggestions for the best jazz records of 2017.

I wonder if any of these will coincide with our choices here?

    5 pm Jazz Line-Up
Julian Joseph presents a special edition from BBC Scotland's Pacific Quay studios in Glasgow, with pianist Tord Gustavsen and gypsy jazz combo Rose Room, plus the organ-driven sounds of DT6.

Sounds like a defoliant. Actually, far from being a "special edition" this programme is in fact another repeat.

    12 midnite
    Geoffrey Smith's Jazz

Geoffrey Smith showcases boogie-woogie recordings from pianists and big bands alike.

This is getting repetitious - oh well never mind, just roll 'em Geoff.

Geoffrey Smith celebrates boogie-woogie, introducing examples by pianists and big bands.

    New Years Day
    11 pm Jazz Now

From the Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton, Soweto Kinch presents a concert by the American trumpeter Christian Scott a Tunde Adjuah. The band also includes Lawrence Fields on piano and Fender Rhodes, Kris Funns on bass, Joe Dyson on drums and Logan Richardson on saxophone.

Ah! - something actually fresh to start off the new year!

Surprised that no one commented on the Christian Scott set. Having listened to this, I would have to say that the music really hits home in a way that I think is absent in so much contemporary jazz these days. I just feel that this music has the ability to make a proper connection and even filter over to more populist idioms without compromising its integrity. It does put me in mind of the same kind of approach as someone like Cannonball Adderley albeit updated for these times.
