Just to start this year's traditional greetings, the very best to all, have a cool Christmas and an invigorating New Year. The Christmas record now playing, Sonny Rollins Qrt, "Winter Wonderland", RCA sessions. Fab.
My record of the year: Thelonious Monk Quartet (plus Le Barney Wilen), the music recorded for Vadim's "Liaison Dangereuses", NYC July 1959 (2 CD set plus booklet, SAM Records). It is just marvellous, everyone sounding so fresh, alert and energetic, and Mr Monk giving it his all, really showing what he do. And his calling Art Taylor "a dumb mother t'ucker" in the closing 14 minute rehearsal track is a bonus. Monk requiring a bizarre drum figure and AT getting thrown each time Monk comes in. He, Taylor, plays beautifully otherwise. They all do. 1959 WAS a very good year.
A bientôt.
