Prom 53: Beneath the Underdog Revisited

There's some chat about this concert that's sort of relevant to the jazz forum here:

Just watched this appalling fiasco, I'm afraid this was the "One Show's" version of Mingus complete with a BBC big band type of orchestra and a horrible crappy Rock drummer. It made a mockery of Mingus music and the whole thing was topped off by a ludicrous baritone player dressed in pink that hooted and booted in a parody of R&B tenor.
Needless to say the promenaders loved it and gave them a standing ovation ...... God help us.

Just played Mingus X 5 and my faith has returned

THen I'm glad I avoided it, and watched an old video the Ken Russell Arena programme. At least you knew Russell was parodying the musicians he selected in his drama documentaries with tongue firmly in cheek.

WKCR (Columbia University Radio NY) is broadcasting Mingus 24/7 today in honour of his Birthday...

"Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus..." As Ian Dury, a huge fan, once said.

Btw, yesterday was Wayne Shorter's birthday, he was 84. I always think of him as younger.

I enjoyed the audio version. Now watching the televised version - excellent. I would agree however that the absence of commentary is better. We are allowed to make our own judgment about "fusciaman" (Leo Pellegrino) and his old mate Barry Sax.
