    7.30 BBC Proms 2017

From the Royal Albert Hall, London, with Georgia Mann. Following sell-out* Quincy Jones and Jamie Cullum Proms last year, Jules Buckley returns with his Metropole Orkest to celebrate the life and music of composer, bandleader and bass player Charles Mingus. Mingus favourites including Better Get it in Your Soul, Moanin and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat are performed by a starry line-up of artists including Kandace Springs, Shabaka Hutchings, Christian Scott and Leo Pellegrino. A giant of jazz, Mingus (1922-79) combined the classic style of Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton with the radical spirit of black music of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. He has influenced artists from Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello to Debbie Harry.

Shabaka Hutchings (saxophones), Christian Scott (trumpet), Kandace Springs (vocals), Metropole Orkest, conductor Jules Buckley.

During the interval, in Proms Extra, Georgia Mann discusses Charles Mingus with Catherine Tackley and Geoffrey Smith.

*I leave others to disagree but don't think they really mean sell-out in that sense. Actually, for the Proms, this one looks interesting.
