RIP Alphonse Mouzon - Died on Xmas Day

The vicious year of 2016 continues to claim the lives of our beloved musicians.

I bought Alphonse Mouzon’s amazing fusion album "Mind Transplant" in 1976 (a year after it came out?) and I preferred it to my Billy Cobham and Return to Forever albums that I had.

He was a fabulous drummer. Check him out if you can.

RIP Alphonse, and thanks for the music

Very sad, but thanks for letting us know, Beef O. Yes, I agree - a drummer who added more viscerality (if that is the word) to the Fusion scene of the time than any of the other more famous ones, I feel. His work on McCoy Tyner's "Sahara" (1972) was just phenomenal in its explosive energies, a real pressure cooker, and still blows me away.

And here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bIk1Wl21Yk in an early (1971) Weather Report TV studio session - beautiful, intensely complex and energetic.

It seems I have been seriously underestimating Weather Report.

Easy to do, in the light of the later, more composed stuff.
