Gimme Elmo's fire when the mornin' comes

Quite a few extras to this week's offerings:

    Sat 10 Dec
    4.00 Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton presents listeners' requests in all styles of jazz - from trad to contemporary, vocal and instrumental. This week's selection includes improvisation from Florida-born saxophonist Archie Shepp, now 79, and an instrumental track from pioneer of 'smooth soul' Sade.

Pop music: what's the world coming to...

    5.00 Jazz Line-Up
The Euroradio Jazz Orchestra, led by saxophonist Tommy Smith, in a performance from November at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Featuring the first performance of Kenny Wheeler's The Sweet Sister Suite and a contribution by trumpeter Alexandra Ridout, winner of the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award. Julian Joseph presents.

One remembers being impressed by Ms Ridout.

    12.00 Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
Geoffrey Smith picks out some of his favourite recordings of the music of Louis Armstrong and his Hot Fives and Sevens, including Cornet Chop Suey and Potato Head Blues.

Take it away Satch! (Don Cherry's "Brown Rice" could have made a nice side dish).

    Sun 11 Dec
    6.45 Sunday Feature:
    Whatever Happened to the Avant-Garde?

Where does one go in order to find the avant-garde today? Does it still exist? Paul Morley begins his search for answers in Hampstead, north London.

Let's see if anything from our music world gets mentioned. This rather overlaps with:

    Radio 2
    7.00 Clare Teal

Big band, swing and jazz from the past 80 years, tonight with British jazz singer Norma Winstone.

Ms Winstone is not yet 80, it should be mentioned, but I thought her more than worthy of mention in this otherwise usually anodyne programme - no disprespects to Ms Teal.

    Radio 3
    11.30 London Jazz Festival

Pianist Francesco Tristano and the BBC Concert Orchestra perform Bach and Tristano's own "free piano concerto" Island Nation at the EFG ondon Jazz Festival.

Any relation? How come I missed this?? (Time to re-check my programme )

    Mon 12 Dec
    11.00 Jazz Now

Soweto Kinch presents a concert by Andrew Bain's Embodied Hope Quartet, recorded last month at Herts Jazz Club in Welwyn Garden City.

An excellent JRR. Everyone a hit. I didn't realise Archie Shepp did easy listening.
