    Mose Allison....RIP

    "Mose Allison Dies at 89
Singer, pianist and songwriter deftly combined jazz and blues
    By JazzTimes

Mose Allison, the Mississippi-born singer and pianist whose effortless blend of jazz and blues and smart, prolific work as a songwriter influenced the blues-based rockers of the 1960s and ’70s, died this morning, of natural causes, at home on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Allison, an NEA Jazz Master, was 89, and had celebrated his birthday on Nov. 11. His death was confirmed for JazzTimes by his music attorney.

Allison is survived by his wife of 65 years, Audre; his daughters Alissa, Amy and Janine Allison; his son, John Allison; and two grandchildren.

A full-length obituary will post to JazzTimes.com later today."

HUGELY saddened by this. Mose was a kind of life soundtrack and one of the key people who first got me into jazz. Great singer, wonderful piano player (those early Prestige dates are gems), writer, and human being. Great guy. "They always told me there'd be days like this..."

A distinctive voice in Jazz and Blues, with an original piano sound. I always liked his style though sadly I have not played him for some time. I'll never forget Parchman Farm, but I know I have others to listen to later.

    RIP Mose Allison.

Sad news if a good age.

I bought a CD of "Back Country Suite" and "Local Color" about two weeks ago but The Clash introduced me to him in 1980 or thereabouts.

'I'm still waitin' to get a fair appraisal," he says in a smiling tone. "I don't know whether it'll happen or not. Maybe after I'm dead in 30 years or so."

        "Ever since the world ended
I don't go out as much.
        People that I once befriended
just don't bother to stay in touch.
Things that used to seem so splendid
        Don't really matter today.
It's just as well the world ended
        It wasn't working anyway"

        - Mose Allison.

I was interested to hear on radio today that Pete Towsend's original 'My Generation' was directly inspired by Mose Allison; and when they recorded 'Who, Live at Leeds' they included 'Young Man Blues'. It was a big selling record, and Mose says he got an end-of-year letter from the Royalties' people and in it was a cheque for 5000 dollars. He didn't understand what was going on. He said he usually got about 20 dollars from them. Mose said he'd never heard of The Who and didn't know they'd done the cover, but it was the first time he ever earned money from his jazz. I think that was the gist!
