An extraordinary legacy - and interesting detail from The Guardian.
RIP Phil Chess.
There's a story that when Keith Richards went back to Howling Wolf's home on the Stones first visit to Chicago, Wolf didn't even have any of his own records! There's that wonderful film of Wolf on Shindig, his first network US TV appearance ever, scaring the hell out of unsuspecting white teenagers and being uncompromising. Comps to the Stones who insisted he appear.
I'm also more than a bit sceptical about the Chess brothers studio role. Their quote on how they got successful? "We didn't have any idea about what we were doing".
I think that the black blues musicians were genuinely gobsmacked back in the mid-sixties by the genuine interest in their music and musicianship shown by our white boy blues bands and the Stones and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac recording at Chess studios. They wanted to be part of it and not just rip off the music. I think the comment about the Chess brothers in the studio should be added 'but we were quick learners!'
