Quite liked most of this weeks JRR misself!

Bit patchy last week - possibly 'cos AS was not actually at the helm during the broadcast - he was at the inaugural Durham Ushaw Jazz Festival with Alan Barnes

      Very good it was too!

From one of the featured bands, shouldn't that have been renamed the Brass Monkeys Festival?

Missed that one, unfortunately - too early for the working class. Wasn't that cold either.

Working at home today and am listening to this week's "Jazz Now."

These days I think there is seldom anything quite as boring as the ubiquitous piano trio especially the quirky European kind that frequently claims to be reinventing the wheel and bring jazz to a younger audience. What a nice surprise then to hear Reuben James' trio recorded live and hear, at last, a piano trio which totally understands the jazz tradition and swings like crazy. There are bags of currently unfashionable influences like Errol Garner thrown in to the mix but I am strongly put in mind of Gerald Clayton's recent trios which plough a similar furrow and effectively add a bit of shine to the kind of groups that existed in the 50's and early 60's. I have never heard or read anything about Reuben James before but this set is a revelation brimming with musical intelligence but above all not afraid to swing with vigor. Quite simply the best British group that I have heard for years. More please.....

That'd be last week's show from Flyover, Ian. This week it's another trio, but piano, bass, tenor/sop with Liam Noble on piano. Malija... Glad you liked Reuben. You might have heard him with Sam Smith, but then again, probably not...
