    Prince RIP

Just switched on my computer and found that Prince has died. This was a real shock and, for me, he perhaps represents the last great figure in black popular music before rap eventually led to the diminution in standards where you end up with "artists" of the likes of Kanye West who is something of a joke from a musical perspective.

Prince was probably the most significant pop artist in the 1980's and his career mirrored the point at which jazz started to rediscover itself. I have a sneaking admiration for his best work which all benefit from the kind of off-kilter grooves that have been an addictive influence for more open minded musicians. Miles Davis described Prince at the Duke Ellington of the 1980's and whilst I don't think that Prince was working on the same scale as Ellington, he was probably more musically savvy than most of his contemporaries . There are clips that have gone around of Miles jamming with Prince and the latter famously made a jazz album where he played all of the instruments on the multi-tracked effort. (The results aren't supposed to be that great but how many other pop artists would have been capable of doing this? in my opinion, Prince was a far more significant artist that David Bowie but probably too challenging for most white audiences.

    This article is quite interesting:-

I'm absolutely stunned. He was so young. Such a shame.

I bought all his albums through the 1980s and 1990s, he was one of my favourite artists through those decades.

    RIP

I dislike popular music recorded during the eighties - largely because of the horrible production techniques of the time - but have to concede that Prince was a sarious talent. The (rather appropriate) Sometimes It Snows In April is my favourite track by him.

Like Conchis, most popular, "chart" Music of the 1980s left me cold and still does. Prince was one of the very few exceptions - the craft of his Music-making I found really engaging and enjoyable. And 57, as BeefO says, is just too young.

I hardly know where to start disagreeing with all the contentious nonsense in Ian's post, but yes, this is a sad loss, of someone who produced a huge amount of beautiful work and didn't seem to be finished yet by any means. An amazingly versatile talent and spellbinding performer.

Take no notice, Ian likes to talk nonsense (that's putting it politely)
BUT, as you say, this is a sad loss

              A very sad loss indeed.
              Seriously talented musician.
Sign 'o' The Times, the album generally regarded as his best work, maybe sounds a bit dated now but still packs a punch,a work of genius IMO.

              RIP

Apparently, he recorded music every single day of his professional life. This might be just an industry legend but I can believe that his officially released output doesn't even scratch the surface of the amount of stuff in his vaults.

I think he was probably very talented, but to be honest I never quite got him, but for somebody who created so much and perhaps had so much more to create it is a very sad loss at too young an age.

Actually, I agree wholeheartedly with much of Ian's OP.

Terribly sad loss. Quite the most amazingly talented and accomplished musician and performer.

For me Prince's 'Purple Rain' is one of those enduring Ear Worms...I'll have it in my head for days now.

Given that you have an almost pathological hatred of all amplified music i'm not surprised.
