As a fan of Chicago Blues and 1950's R n' B, I wonder if Bluesnik had ever come across this band who hail from Winchester but busk throughout the South. I caught them playing in town again yesterday morning and think they are terrific. Their latest CD covers a lot of classic blues material and is delivered with a panache and authenticity which I find hugely impressive.

Never heard of them before Ian. The song is "Number 9 Train" by Tarheel Slim from 1958. Itza on Utube. That backing guitar riff is great fun to play and comes, at least the first time I heard it, from Floyd Murphy or Pat Hare who used it on Junior Parker's Feelin Good (Sun) and was directly ripped of by Elvis and Scotty Moore to produce "Mystery Train". And a shed load of money.Comment

The band are local but seem to have a reputation across a much wider area. Their repertoire encompasses things like Howlin' Wolf's "44 blues", Sonny Boy Williams' "Help me", John Lee Hooker's "Rent House Boogie" , tunes by Louis Jordan as well as a re-working of "Summertime." It will be interesting if they get booked for the proposed Winchester Jazz Festival to be held in the autumn.Comment
