Empirical on Jamie this eve (Feb 23)

Sorry - should have spotted this when doing the weekend fare:

    7-8 pm, Radio 2.

I'm afraid this is the most recent utube clip I can find; the band's still the same people:

Registro de Video para la banda de Jazz Empirical, realizado el 19 de Noviembre 2011, en The Southbank Centre, London UK.The band's approach mixes the classi...

I'm off now to see Art Themen and his quartet in a Croydon pub.
    One of my faves.

        Brilliant!

Where else would you get to see Art Themen backed by John Horler, Tim Wells and Trevor Tomkins playing at the top of their powers before an attentive audience for two and a half hours for nowt in a nondescript Victorian pub, other than in Croydon on a Tuesday afternoon in February?

Didn't see much jazz advertised in Croydon when I was working up there last year. I have three projects, one of which was in the town centre. Not too great for parking, mind.

Or, if in vicinity of Old Street:

Good piece, I thought. Some nice tracks either side of "take five" slot too.

Empirical's new release Connection is worth a spin. More here.

The Jazz Lounge concept sounds interesting...

...bit far from here to Old Street Station though!

The Oval Tavern gig is every Sunday, from 1-3.30 pm, and its a freebie: the lady running it comes round halfway through with a beer mug; people are quite generous, usually giving a fiver or tenner. The Tuesday gig is normally only once or twice a month. The fare is mostly pretty mainstream, Pete Long for instance, though Art, Don Weller, and the "Kingston/Richmond lot" (Pete Hurt, Chris Biscoe, Dave Barry etc) are sometimes on there. PM me if you want more info, though I don't go often, especially in winter, it being easiest to reach by bike if one is dependent on buses from where I live. The Oval is located about half a mile from the Westfield shopping mall.

I was intrigued by your post as I listened to some Art Themen and liked what I heard before wondering where exactly he was playing.

My guess was The Oval but it didn't seem to be listed. On a slightly different matter, I see the Fairfield Halls are closing for two years.

Before retiring, Art was the top orthopaedic surgeon at Guys, I believe. Inside knowledge must be useful when it comes to jazz,

The Oval site was only availoable on facebook last time I checked, and I thought, why ever bother to go to all the trouble to register with that. The London listings, including whatever is on at the Oval, can be found at:

                      http://www.jazzinlondon.net.

                        Many thanks for the information.

I share your views on Facebook.

Sometimes I hope to hear that musicians of note are playing within a three mile radius of my home but I suppose that is a bit of a tall order!

Art Themen often performed "hip" surgery

Have a couple of times heard him with just bass and drums. Excellent!

Ronnie Scott used to say that a hip hop was what was done in hospital to musicians of a certain age.
