    Don Braden

A recent discovery for me was tenor saxophonist Don Braden. His quartet album 'Brighter Days'(HighNote) from 2000 has an excellent version of 'My Favorite Things' which manages to be very different from Coltrane's.

Here's his quartet at the Litchfield Jazz Festival in 2013.

A sort of generalised stylist out of mid-period Coltrane and Joe Henderson is always going to win out in the balance of jubilation over originality, especially with a drummer such as this one stoking things up: Ed Jones with Winstone Clifford backing him comes immediately to mind over here - rarely disappoints.

I have been listening to Jazz on 3 whilst working at home this afternoon and this music is a marked contrast that I caught on the I-player. It is strange how this type of jazz would be totally alien to the music preferred by Jez yet it is vastly superior to the here now, gone the next rubbish that I caught on the programme. The scenario is bizarre insofar that the Don Braden track where he is performing with a cracking band would seem totally out of play was the fringe music performed on BBC 3's flagship programme. I would choose this Braden track over anything that was deemed to be cutting edge this afternoon, the majority of which only has a narrow similarity to real jazz.

Don Braden can also be heard as a featured soloist with Peter Hand's latest big band record which ploughs the same kind of jazz which is in danger of being overlooked in favour of people producing records on Moogs of Scandinavian rock acts.

      Another good call from Jazzrook.

Thanks, Ian. I can't recall ever hearing Don Braden on any jazz programme and wonder why.
Agree with you about Jo3 - it seems to have totally lost the plot with its endless pursuit of the latest trend.
Hopefully, the new regime starting in April will get back on the right track.

          What's happening in April?

Must admit I hardly ever listen to Jazz on 3. I was contemplating listening to the Paul Bley episode, but have not yet done so - partly due to comments on this forum!

              Oops - missed that!

Excellent news - looking forward to it.
