The roarin' borealis continues to replenish our Xmas fare.

Hi fellow listeners. Lots of extras to let you know about this time, so while wishing all a very happy Christmas I'll keep this message to this week's generous output, and post the post-Xmas fare in a week's time.

    Sat 19 Dec
    4.00 Jazz Record Requests

Alyn Shipton presents seasonal jazz by Maynard Ferguson and introduces further listener suggestions for ten essential jazz records.

    5.00
    Jazz Line-Up

The Northern Lights season continues as Julian Joseph presents a performance from Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen and his quartet, featuring saxophonist Tore Brunborg, double bassist Mats Ellertsen and drummer Jarle Vespestadt, recorded in Hamburg.

Pianist Tord Gustavsen in concert as part of BBC Radio 3's Northern Lights season.

    12.00
    Geoffrey Smith's Jazz

Including seasonal frolics by Clarence Williams and Bill Harris, performances by Kee Konitz, James P Johnson and Norma Winstone, and a show-stopping finale with Jazz at the Philharmonic featuring Charlie Parker, Roy Eldridge and Lester Young

Geoffrey Smith's Christmas miscellany includes music from Lee Konitz and Norma Winstone.

    Sun 20 Dec
11.00 EBU Day of Christmas Music

The final part with Ian Skelly. From Studio 1, BNR, Sofia. Duke Ellington Sacred Concert Bulgarian National Radio Jazz Chorus and Big Band/Anton Donchiev.

    Mon 21 Dec
    11.00 Jazz on 3

Norwegian improvising vocalist Sidsel Endresen in concert with guitarist Stian Westerhus as part of the Northern Lights season. Also in the programme, British singer Juliet Kelly joins Jez Nelson to discuss the ways in which younger singers from the UK are changing the sound of British vocal jazz. [My emphasis - S_A]

    This could be very interesting.

Sidsel Endresen and Stian Westerhus perform as part of Radio 3's Northern Lights season.

And... just, you'll appreciate, to overload matters:

    11.00 Radio 4
    Mastertapes

1/12 Georgie Fame talks to John Wilson about his album, Rhythm and Blues at the Flamingo.

According to a trail t'other morning, here Georgie re-assembles the original band which made the recording (of part which BTW I have an EP) - which could be difficult, seeing that at least one of them, to my knowledge, is and has been no more for quite some time

    Tues 22 Dec Radio 2
11.00 Ralph Johnson: Jazz Epicenter 6.7

The veteran Earth, Wind and Fire percussionist and vocalist presents a special festive edition with new music and jazz from the 1960s and 70s, with tracks by Vince Guaraldi, Keny Burrell, Roland Kirk and... Earth, Wind and Fire

    And finally.................

Listen up for the final item of New Generation Artists on Radio 3 on Christmas Eve, running from 5.45-7 pm: an improvisation by Laura Jurd, one of my current young UK faves, and Dinosaur, is what it says.

"Glædelig jul og godt nytår!" as Dexter used to shout at midnight on stage at Montmartre? Or to the Little Mermaid? Have a good one!

I heard the two Georgie Fame progs. Very OK for us Flamingo nostalgics. Val Wilmer was in the audience. GF must have a remarkable mass of stories; if he's retiring, time for an autobiography. Anyway there's a very good big retro box of all his early stuff out now. My present to myself.
