Shepp and Mal Waldron in 2002, "Left Alone" (Left Alone Revisited). For someone who was considered ferocious etc in the 1960's, he became a hugely sensitive player later when required and the mood took. And the technique itself was hard worked upon to do it. Quite a legacy.

I've got that duo album, BN. Very moving.
Here's Shepp's heartfelt version of 'Wise One' from 'Ballads For Trane' recorded in 1977 with Albert Dailey, Reggie Workman & Charli Persip:

This one is great Archie Shepp`s cover of John Coltrane song "Wise One" from "Ballads for Trane" (1977) album. Line up: Archie Shepp (Sax), Reggie Workman (B...

      Thelonious Monk - Underground

I love the tune 'Ugly Beauty' - Monk's only tune in triple time.

Didn't know that Joseph K. Monk's version of Carolina Moon was the first jazz in triple time I heard.

Billie Holiday - "Me myself and I" (1937?)

If only for Lester's tenor lines behind her in the second half. Joyful!http://youtu.be/cMrS9_4XyYI?feature=shared

                Soft Machine - Fifth

This is the best, or at least my favourite, Soft Machine Album.

I've loved them all down the years, but this is my desert island one......

Not my favourites - but... that acoustic bass solo by Roy Babbington (one of the great underrateds of the instrument) near the start of Side 2!

Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet - "Mistique", Bluenote 1968.

The Quintet recorded two albums for Bluenote, or were bought in. No idea why these records are more known/regarded, as they are both outstanding. Very much along the lines of the Miles/Shorter Quin but with their own chemistry and drive. Tenor player is Leon Henderson, Joe's youngest brother. A Big family. Charles Moore, a fine striking trumpet player...

                            Good evening

I have largely been exploring Classical music the last few months as so much of this music is unfamiliar to me. However, the one jazz album which has currently really impressed me is Tyshawn Sorey's trio recording called "Mesmerism" which features pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Matt Brewer. I have been dismissive of Diehl in the past as I have found his work to be extremely conservative and ,when I caught him performing live with his own trio several years ago, the group felt markedly inferior to alot of jazz we take for granted in the UK. The disc with Tyshawn Sorey is another proposition in my opinion and a strong candidate for album of 2023. I have been hugely impressed by Sorey's trio which sounds like Paul Bley playing standards. Alot of the material is familiar yet the album also includes compositions by Ellington. Muhal Richard Abrams and Paul Motian. Brewer and drummer Sorey seem to be tugging the music in a different direction and the music does stand up well to the best of Keith Jarett's works. I have really enjpyed this disc. It is probably comservative for Sorey but radical for Diehl. i would suggest that the likes of Elmo and Jazzrook would enjoy this.

Other than this, I have been listening alot to Villa Lobos' piano works. as well as trying to play some of his works from an anthology which ranges from simple to impossible. The last six months have been interesting as I gave been exploring music which was previously unfamiliar. I quite like Hadyn's piano sonatas and have been seeing comparisons with the likes of Hank Jones / Tommy Flanagan in the way that Haydn keeps the lines simple and uncluttered. This was a series of music I had never really listened to before. I love Scarlatti sonatas but I like the concise wittiness of Haydn. Not difficult to see why the late Steve Lacy was a fan!
