V good recorded quality on that. I was there: Cherry was given to taking numerous "breaks" during that particular set, letting the band just get on with it. At one point he re-emerged from backstage, leading a certain Keith Tippett by hand, and they sort of danced their way through the band, going from left to right, before disappearing once more around the back. Keith was smoking (or had in his mouth) probably the longest joint I have ever seen. He would never do such a thing today, of course!

Wish I'd been there, S_A, but glad to have this BBC 'Jazz Legends' CD(with excellent notes by A. Shipton).

                    Tina Brooks: True Blue

Another excellent Blue Note album streamed from Qobuz.

I confess I'd never heard of him until someone in a YouTube video referred to him.

Oh, I just LOVE that album!!!

I had the wonderful good fortune to meet Jaki, towards the end of his life. He had been playing, solo and in a duo with Howard Riley, at the Bracknell Festival. I asked him if he had any views about British jazz, putting to him John Lewis's view that "He could realy swing, your Bach", and Jaki replied solemnly after a pause, holding up an instructive forefinger, "Now, BRAHMS - HE could reallly swing!"
