Dug this excellent obscure album album out from the collection today - John Patton "Soul Connection"

John Patton Organ, Melvin Sparks Guitar, Grachan Moncur 111 Trombone, Grant Reed Tenor and Alvin Queen Drums recorded 1983

A very tight band with the underrated guitarist Melvin Sparks and a really good tenor player previously unknown to me.

just started watching Nina Simone at Montreux 1976 on BBC 4

Here's a review of Nina Simone at Montreux, 1976. I found it a strange but riveting performance:

Simone’s prowess on the piano and her exceptional baritone were intact, but the 76 Montreux show can be tough to watch for the uninitiated

Yes, not that you'd know from their wiki entry, which incorrectly states they were formed in 1974.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing them on the 27th in Hammersmith London.

The best part of this is Lage's awesome rendition of Autumn Leaves, which starts around 1:12 in:

Yeah I agree, it was a bit like listening to Bird's "Lover Man"
The three Montreux programmes that followed Nina was a mixed bag also, dedicated to Claude Nobs unsurprisingly focussed more on the Rock acts (which were good) but too many talking heads too little music.

Listening to Mingus 'Hora Decubitus' Mingus driving bass, Booker Ervin, Richard Williams and crazy off the wall Eric Dolphy. Mingus x5 - Life affirming stuff.

Now virtually spinning: Mary Halvorsen, Amaryllis https://maryhalvorson.bandcamp.com/album/amaryllis

Quite original in sound and texture although I could do with a bit less of the straightforward head-solo-head format.

Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, Ahmed Abdul-Malik & Shadow Wilson playing 'Nutty' at Carnegie Hall, 1957:

Nutty. At Carnegie Hall. 1957. Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, two of the biggest giants of jazz.
