    A Songbirds Temple - Dunmall/Sanchez/Sanders

I bought this at the Paul Dunmall gig at the beginning of October, but only just getting round to listening to it now... Might take a few listens to get into it, but I am enjoying it...

My new jazz guitar teacher, Christian Miller, gave me some homework - based on something Lennie Tristano would teach, I'm to learn to sing by memory a one-chorus solo by either Charlie Christian or Charlie Parker (I'm not allowed to touch my guitar in doing this!) and I have opted for Charlie Christian, since I am less familiar with his oeuvre, apart from 'Topsy: Swing to Bop' some of which I transcribed a long time ago, though that's a longer solo than the one I'm going to learn. Anyway, I am looking forward to familiarising myself with this music.

              Enjoyed that, elmo.
Here's 'Awful Dream', one of my favourite Lightnin' Hopkins tracks, recorded in 1960 from the album 'Mojo Hand':

There is a Lightnin Hopkins track which I've been trying to (re)track for years. There's a verse, "She don't write me no letters, nor send me no telegram, I might be down here in West Helena, or over there in Vietnam".

So it's from around that time. And Lightnin' did just pull lyrics down on a whim for another spin of his core tunes. But it's a good one.

Have to say I am pretty unfamiliar with Lightnin' Hopkin's and have found these tracks terrific. To me this music sounds like what a lot of those Classic blues frecords from the 20s and 30s would have sounded like had the recording quality been better. This music is absolutely brilliant. Thank for posting.

And from me, and a special thanks to SA for all the hard work. And Alyn for playing hip platters.

Here's Ray Charles in 1979 proving he could still do it, live in a German Monastery (no I don't know why either) with Charles Brown's "Merry Christmas Baby".

"I'm all lit up like a Christmas tree". Yes Ray!

I would also like to add my wishes to everyone in this room. I concur with the gratitude towards SA which, unfortunately does not always get appreciated. Like most in this room, I have gained a lot of pleasure from the discussions over the years in this room and have loved sharing the differing opinions. Over the years I think this room has made me a bit more conservative and appreciative of a wider range of music. I would also like to say that , after my Dad and my good friend Dave Hoare, I have probably been put on to more jazz by Jazzrook than anyone else. Jazzrook might not be 100% aware, but he has been a massive influence on my tastes in jazz, not only in here but also JRR and even on Amazon! Thanks.

Hope everyone has a peaceful and pleasant Christmas.

                            Cheers

                            Ian

Thanks to you all for your appreciating my weekly... spin. Apologies for the absence this week - I have only just now got a new monitor, after the other one died. I am most grateful for all the clips others have found and put up on here - these have introduced me to a lot of names others have known about for years, particularly in Hard Bop. Have a safe and enjoyable Xmas everyone.
